History
The Second Generation iBook Clamshell was introduced in September 2000. It brought speed increases and a colour change to Apple's consumer level portables. It replaced the original Clamshell iBook. Two versions were made at 366MHz (in graphite, lime green and indigo) and a 466MHz version with a DVD-ROM (in graphite) - the second 366MHz and the 466MHz versions had a FireWire port.
As with all of Apple's consumer level ("i" series) machines, they are not very upgradeable. Only the RAM and by hard drive may be upgraded. They shipped with Mac OS 9.0.4 but can run OSX as long as there is sufficient RAM.

How to Identify these Machines
The G3 iBook Clamshell has a distinctive style case, and can be distinguished easily from Apple's other portables.
There were two ranges of Clamshells made - this page deals with the second generation of machines, which came in indigo, lime green and graphite. Most of these machines have a FireWire port.
Earlier Clamshell iBooks were the blueberry and tangerine, were translucent, and have no FireWire port.
The 366MHz versions came in graphite (no FireWire port), indigo and lime green (both with FireWire). The 466 came in graphite only, with a white perspex cover.

Memory Upgrades
The iBook G3 SE has either 32MB or 64MB of RAM soldered onto the logic board, and one RAM slot which will take up to a 256MB stick - giving a maximum of 288MB or 320MB depending on the built in memory.
It will take either PC100 or PC66 SODIMM modules. PC100 is generally supplied simply because it is cheaper.

Difficulty 3 / 5 - Reasonably easy.
Turn off the machine, then remove the power cable and the battery.
The RAM is housed below the keyboard. To remove the keyboard, release the catches at the top of the keyboard (between ESC & F1 and F8 & F9). This reveals the internal parts.
There is a metal protective plate secured with 2 screws. Remove this plate to reveal the RAM socket. The socket is easily reached and replaced. Reassemble the machine and the upgrade is done!
CD & DVD Drive Upgrades
The iBook G3 SE came equipped with a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive loaded by a tray on the left hand side of the unit. At present we don't stock internal CD or DVD writers which are compatible with this machine. It is possible to use an external device via USB or FireWire (FireWire highly recommended).

Difficulty 5 / 5 - Very Hard

We do sell the drives for fitting yourself, however we are unable to offer phone support or instructions on how to do so.
Graphics Card Upgrades
The graphics card in your iBook G3 SE is part of the main logic board. Therefore it is not possible to change the graphics card or increase its performance. It may be worth expanding your memory to its maximum to try and compensate, however this will have at most a limited impact on your iBook's 3D capabilities.
There are no graphics card upgrades available for these Macs
Expansion Card Upgrades
Your iBook G3 SE has no available PCMCIA sockets for connectivity expansion.
