NO FIX, NO FEE - Flexgate Screen Repair MacBook Pro Retina 2016-2019 13" & 15"
What is it?
Flexgate is where the LCD screen backlight cable on a wide range of MacBook Pro Retina machines, those produced between 2016 and 2019, become damaged by repeated use. These cables were poorly designed and too short, and they can rub slowly over the T-Con and airport board which they wrap around. The pictures below show a cable suffering from Flexgate:
Apple did acknowledge this fault for some 2016 13" machines and offered a free replacement for failed screens on these models. But they have not acknowledged it for the other models which suffer the same fault. The free replacement service for the 13" 2016 model has now been discontinued.
What are the Symptoms?
The main early symptoms are a "stage light" effect, where the bottom part of the display shows bright regular spots. If allowed to go further it will turn into a problem where the screen will turn off after being opened beyond a certain angle. At the final stage, you will get no backlight at all.
What is this Service?
In this service we will cut off the original connector and splice in a new piece of cable, elongating the existing cable in the process. We strengthen the join with microwires and seal with a special coating.
Steps to repair:
No Fix, No Fee
Not all screens can be repaired in this fashion, sometimes damage has occurred to the panel. Until we see your screen we cannot tell 100% if we can fix your panel. If we are unable to fix your screen we can quote you on either a refurbished or new panel (which go from about £250 - £700 + Vat depending on model and condition). But if if you do not wish to go ahead with a replacement, you would simply pay return shipping to have the machine sent back to you.
