This is a PCI-Express card, which is the expansion card used in Apple Workstations from the PowerMac G5 Dual-Core onwards. These cards are only compatible with PCI-Express enabled computers, and will not work in older PCI or PCI-X based systems. Machines with a Thunderbolt connection can add PCIe expansion slots using a Thunderbolt PCIe Chassis.
The card is a USB 3 controller, it provides external USB 3 ports for your Mac. USB 3 is up to 10 times faster than USB 2 and is backward compatible with it.
